In the early days of runflat tire technology, runflats were an afterthought, a means to add a “added safety” type package to an existing product line. With the added weight begins the great debate. With adding reinforcement to the sidewall comes added weight, albeit not much added in the grand spectrum of the weight of the car. Runflat tires are made with reinforced sidewalls, while each runflat tire manufacturer has a different method to the reinforcement they all work in similar ways. Run flat tires are able to be driven 50 miles at 50 Miles per hour with a puncture or little to no air in the tire, the way that runflat tires are able to do this is in their construction. So in short, don’t believe the rumor that runflats are a new/fad/gimmick. The first production car to come standard with a economical common-use run flat was the 1987 Porsche 959, capable of 199MPH, proving the sustainability of the runflat system. Digital dash boards, standard electronic fuel-injection, all-wheel drive street legal cars, and runflat tires all found their way into exotic supercars and slowly trickled down to normal consumer vehicles. In the 1980s the changes in the automotive world were progressing and changing quickly. Quickly the disadvantages of these solid rubber type types outweighed the benefits. Many manufactures have made prototypes and even put in production in the 1970s. The idea of a tire that cant go flat has been around since tires have existed. Runflat tires, what are they?
